My second artifact is my science unit plan. At the beginning of the project, I felt overwhelmed. But after I followed the weekly guidelines provided by the course, it was a more logical process.
What I learned from the lesson planning how to identify the desired outcome, carefully select the assessment, and prepare the activities that will help students achieve the results. First, I have to identify the content intended for students. Then, I have to identify the resources that I needed, such as the websites, books videos that will help deliver the content. It was challenging for me to narrow down an extensive content and focus only on the essential questions. When the crucial questions were selected, and the resources were chosen, I had to create an assessment. The assessment needed to serve as a formative and summative assessment. In this academic measure, students could demonstrate initial their thoughts and how they modify their thinking when they get new understandings. During this part of the process, I had to change the way that I use to plan. Before these projects, I focused a lot more in the activities but little in the assessment. This mind-shift helped me center in what the students will be able to produce by the end of the unit. What language should be expected and what supports should be in place to help students move to a better level of understanding. Finally, creating well-planned standard-based lessons that support the content. In this process, I asked myself if the activity was meaningful and aligned to academic. If I answer to that question yes, I then elaborate more in the learning activity. If I objectively decided that the learning activity did not match both of those requirements, then I will discard it.
In conclusion, creating this unit plan make me reflect on my practice. It provided me with essential tools to focus on the non-negotiables and the ways that I will supplement the curriculum so students can meet the expectations.
