Before this multimedia course EENN677, I didn’t know much about Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. In the past I have used both of them without knowing what they were, I also use to think that these two tools were the same; however, in the article “Reality vs Virtual Reality from the website Augmented.com explained the difference between these two tools. The website explains that “Virtual reality (VR) is an artificial, computer-generated simulation or recreation of a real-life environment or situation.” Virtual reality stimulates the user’s vision and hearing. “Augmented Reality, (AR) is a technology that layers computer-generated enhancements atop an existing reality in order to make it more meaningful through the ability to interact with it.” After reading the article, it was clear to me that I had some limited experience with these tools. I have used Augmented Reality in the past when buying furniture. The item will appear on my cell phone then the item could be placed digitally be placed in the space that I need it. This tool is wonderful for people like me that cannot imagine something without seeing it. I have used this when moving, buying or shopping. I have used Virtual Reality at entertainment parks at Universal Studios or when playing digital games at D&B’s. I think these tools can be used in the classroom to complement our lessons, bring experiences and artifacts to our students. Patricia Brown’s EdSurge “How to Transform Your Classroom with Augmented Reality” AR helps students create meaningful connections to content with real-life examples. These tools facilitate differentiation and equity in our classrooms. Once I feel more proficient with this tool, I will be interested in exploring virtual tours in my classroom.
During this course, we read many articles that help me growth professionally and gave me some knowledge about digital tools that I have not use. One article that makes think about the skills my students need to read online was the article F-Shaped Pattern of Reading on the Web: Misunderstood, But Still Relevant. This article makes realize that my students did n’t have the tools to extract information from a text efficiently. Now, I teach students about the F shape pattern so they so they are exposed to different types digital text.
One of the greatest aspects of this class is the quality of the discussions, the exchange of information among cohort peers, and teachers around district 203. It has been a great experience sharing tools, tips, and ideas with colleagues. At the same time, we had the opportunity to problem solve using the different tools.
My professional growth has been monumental. I used to be timid trying new tools in my lessons. Now I take risks in technology and try to use it daily with my students. I look forward to using the videos I created, the designs and recordings with my students. So my lessons are more engaging and fun!
