Visual aids such us: graphic organizers, conceptual maps, and drawings help students activate their background knowledge so they can make connections to the new content. This week, I am reflecting on ways to incorporate graphic design into my classroom an how these tools will support my students.
Oracy development for all students: Presenting drawings, pictures, and charts promotes oracy among Language Learners. When a teacher posts a question about an image, students can use their developmental language to express what they observe, how they feel and what they think about an image. This simple activity makes students participate and take risks to express themselves.
Teacher guide student accountability: When teachers provide visual aids as part of instruction in the classroom, students will periodically refer to them for clarification making students accountable of their own learning.
Other ways to use graphic design
There are multiple ways to incorporate design principles in the classroom. One way educators might use graphic design at school is by creating and uploading to their website their lesson's anchor charts so students and families have access to them at home. Another way to incorporate graphic design in the classroom, it’s by creating the family invitations for annual classroom’s author’s brunch. Digital tools provide a variety of ways to enhance education and home-school connections. The key to this digital immersion is the willingness of educators to learn and apply what they learn at their own rate so learning is enhanced and fun for our digital learners.
